June 3:
MIXED MESSAGES IN THE MEDIA: THE EVOLVING LANDSCAPE OF FEMALE IDENTITY
WHAT OUR BOYS ARE REALLY LEARNING ABOUT BEING A MAN: THE MISREPRESENTATION OF SEX AND SEXUALITY ON THE INTERNET
As our panel made clear, today’s youth are weaving their way through an increasingly complex world in which technology and sexuality are inextricably entwined.
A generation of young men and women are growing up confused about sexual norms after years of exposure to explicit content on the Internet and advertising that teaches them that women are objects, not human beings.
As Mary Kay Blakely reminded us: “Turning a person into a thing is almost always the first step toward violence against an individual.”
Karyl E. Ketchum’s research – and personal experience – demonstrates just how true that statement may be.
